Economic Development
As the core function of City government is to provide basic services ranging from zoning to public safety, the City must ensure that these core functions relied upon by our business community are delivered in an efficient and cost-effective manner. At the same time, City government must be accountable to business by maintaining a friendly business environment. Our City government should minimize regulation and take an active role in expediting the implementation and utilization of core City services.
To encourage growth in Honolulu, the City must concentrate its limited resources on basic services - public safety, waste disposal, and transportation; rather than trying to duplicate services or programs that are being performed by the State or the Hawaii Tourism Authority. By doing its part in upgrading and improving the physical plant of the City, we make the City a more attractive option for both business investors and visitors alike. The permitting process should also be reviewed regularly to identify any processes that can be expedited, or even eliminated.
My general philosophy towards government is that it be limited in nature and as
minimally intrusive as possible. Government has often tried to micromanage business, leading to disastrous results. Instead, the City should allow business and tourism industry leaders to take the initiative with minimal government interference. The City should concentrate on delivering core services effectively and efficiently in cooperation with business leaders.
